Clover Flex Not Working? Troubleshooting Guide (2026)

25 June 2026

Clover Flex not working? Whether it won’t connect, won’t print, or is stuck on a software update, most of these faults have a two-minute fix you can do yourself behind the counter.

The short version

  • Best for: Cafés, shops and restaurants running a Clover Flex that’s misbehaving mid-trade
  • The point: The common Clover Flex problems — network drops, no receipts, won’t charge, stuck updating — are almost all fixable on the spot
  • What to do: Match your symptom to the section below and follow the steps before you assume it’s broken
  • Heads up: A Clover Flex that keeps dropping its connection usually has a WiFi or signal problem behind it, not a hardware fault

Clover Flex not working? Try this first

The Clover Flex is a handheld terminal with a built-in receipt printer, a barcode scanner, and both WiFi and LTE for mobile data. It’s a capable machine, but when it locks up at the worst moment it’s easy to assume the worst.

Start with the universal fix: press and hold the power button on the side until the menu appears, choose Restart (or hold it for around 10 seconds to force a shutdown), then power it back on. A clean restart clears most freezes, connection drops and printing hiccups.

If that doesn’t do it, find your exact issue below.

Clover Flex won’t connect to the network

If you’re seeing “offline” or payments are hanging, the Flex has lost its connection. It uses WiFi where it can and switches to LTE mobile data as backup.

Fix: get the Flex back online

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to open the status panel and check whether WiFi or LTE shows a signal.
  2. Tap the gear/settings icon, go to WiFi, and confirm it’s on and connected to your business network — not a neighbour’s open network.
  3. Re-enter the WiFi password if it won’t connect. Watch for typos in capitals and numbers.
  4. Restart your router (unplug 30 seconds, plug back in) and give the Flex a minute to reconnect.
  5. If WiFi’s down but LTE has signal, the Flex should keep working on mobile data — check you’ve got a bar or two of signal where you trade.

Constant drops usually mean weak WiFi at the till. Move closer to the router or look at an extender — a terminal at the far end of the shop fights for signal all day.

Clover Flex printer out of paper or not printing

No receipt is the classic Clover Flex call, and it’s nearly always the paper roll rather than a printer fault.

Fix: reload the roll and clear the printer

  • Open the printer. Pull the latch and lift the cover on top of the Flex. If the roll’s empty or down to the cardboard core, swap it.
  • Drop the roll in the right way. Clover Flex uses thermal paper that prints on one side only. The paper should come off the bottom of the roll and feed out the front. If it prints blank, it’s in upside down — turn the roll over.
  • Leave a tail. Let a few centimetres of paper stick out, then close the cover until it clicks shut.
  • Clear a jam by removing any crumpled paper in the feed direction — never yank it backwards.
  • Test by reprinting the last receipt from the transaction history rather than running a fresh card.
Worth knowing:

Clover Flex takes a specific width of thermal roll. Using the wrong size is a common cause of jams and faint prints. Keep a few spares of the correct roll behind the counter so you’re never caught short.

Clover Flex battery won’t charge

If the Flex is dying through the day or won’t power up, work through the power chain before assuming the battery’s gone.

Fix: rule out the charger and dock

  1. Check the cable and plug. Use the original Clover charger if you can — underpowered third-party chargers often won’t charge it properly.
  2. Test the socket. Plug something else in to confirm the wall socket is live, and avoid a crowded extension lead.
  3. Clean the charging port and dock pins. Dust and grease build up and break the connection — a dry wipe often fixes a Flex that “won’t charge”.
  4. Seat it properly if you charge via a dock. Make sure the charging icon appears, not just that it’s sitting in the cradle.
  5. Give it 10–15 minutes. A flat battery can be slow to wake the screen, so don’t write it off after 30 seconds.

Clover Flex frozen or screen not responding

A locked-up screen mid-sale is unnerving, but don’t keep tapping — that can double up a payment once it recovers.

Fix: force a restart

  1. Press and hold the power button for 10–15 seconds until it shuts down or the restart menu appears.
  2. Power it back on and wait for it to fully load before touching the screen.
  3. Check your transaction history afterwards to make sure the frozen payment didn’t go through twice.
  4. If it keeps freezing, it may be installing an update in the background — leave it on WiFi and let it finish.

Clover Flex payments declining

If cards are being refused, work out whether it’s one card or all of them — that tells you where the problem sits.

  • One card declining: Ask the customer to insert rather than tap, or try another card. That’s the card or the bank, not the Flex.
  • Every card declining: Check you’re online. No connection means the payment can’t reach the bank — restart the connection and retry.
  • Everything failing with an error: Restart the device. If it continues, your merchant account or processor may have a temporary issue worth phoning about.

Clover Flex stuck on a software update

Now and then a Flex stalls part-way through an update and sits on a loading screen. Resist the urge to pull the power straight away.

  • Give it time. Some updates take 10–20 minutes. A progress bar that’s slowly moving is fine — leave it.
  • Keep it online and charged. Updates need a stable WiFi connection and enough battery. Plug it in and don’t move it off the network.
  • If it’s truly stuck (no movement for 30+ minutes), hold the power button to force a restart — it should resume or roll back the update on reboot.
  • Don’t force-restart repeatedly. If it won’t come back after one reboot, that’s the point to call support rather than keep cycling the power.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Clover Flex not working?

A Clover Flex not working is usually down to a lost network connection, an empty receipt roll, a flat battery, or a stalled software update. Start by restarting the device (hold the power button for 10 seconds), then check it’s online and the paper roll’s loaded. Those few checks clear the majority of faults without needing an engineer.

How do I restart a Clover Flex?

Press and hold the power button on the side until the menu appears and choose Restart, or hold it for around 10–15 seconds to force a shutdown, then power it back on. A soft restart fixes frozen screens, dropped connections and most glitches. Avoid a factory reset unless support guides you through it.

Why won’t my Clover Flex connect to WiFi?

Usually it’s the wrong password, a router that needs restarting, or weak signal at the till. Re-enter the WiFi password in settings, restart your router, and move the device closer if the signal’s poor. The Flex will fall back to LTE mobile data so you can keep trading meanwhile.

Does Smart Payment Solutions supply the Clover Flex?

Yes — we supply and support Clover machines including the Flex, alongside SumUp, Square, Teya, Shift4 and others. Because we’re an independent broker we’ll match you to the device and rates that genuinely fit, not whatever we’re tied to, and with no long contracts.

Still not behaving? Here’s the next step

If you’ve tried the steps and your Clover Flex still won’t play ball, the issue may be the connection or the merchant setup behind it rather than the hardware. It’s worth a proper look — especially if you suspect you’re paying over the odds or stuck in a contract.

We’re based in the North East and have helped over 500 UK businesses sort their card payments with fair rates and support you can actually phone. No long contracts on what we recommend, and no pressure if your current setup’s working fine.
